One of my Palestinian friends brought his two sons, their first football match. They had never heard of St Mirren before, but by the end of the match had become the most vocal supporters shouting “Cooooome on St Mirren!” anytime the ball came anywhere near us. The two boys couldn’t keep the name of the opposition, Dundee United, in their minds. So they just called them “the oranges.” Which made for amusing cheers like, “Hey, you defender, smash that orange!”

There was also an interesting discussion that one guy had with an Afghan refugee about why the team is called St Mirren. The team takes its name from a seventh century Irish monk (in Irish, Meadhran) who came to share Christianity in Scotland and established an abbey in Paisley... God can be found in many places, even at a noisy Scottish football match.
