CIC and St Mirren FC

A couple of months ago, I went with a group of refugee guys to watch a St Mirren football match; the club kindly donated tickets for the match. Some interesting things happening there: a “Community Interest Company” has been set up and is looking to purchase a 52% stake in the club. This means that the football club is then run in a way that benefits the whole community and gives fans a greater say in how the club is run. The focus of the club then is for community benefit, not private profit. It’s a promising prospect and could point to a positive way that professional sport can improve and have a greater reciprocal relationship with local communities.
